Mediating Effect of Family Communication on Chemyon (Face) Sensitivity and Subjective Happiness of Middle-Aged Married Men and Women

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study examines the mediating effect of family communication on the relationship of Chemyon (face) sensitivity and the subjective happiness of middle-aged Korean married men and women.
Methods: The participants were 359 married men and women, and the data were collected by self-administered questionnaire in Jeollabuk-Do (North Jeolla Province).
Results: Correlation analysis showed that the subjective happiness was positively related to social formality dimension but negatively to the consciousness of others dimension of Chemyon sensitivity. Open marital and parental-child communication were positively associated with subjective happiness. The analysis results of the mediating effect of family communication indicated that marital communication had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between the consciousness of others dimension of Chemyon sensitivity and subjective happiness. Parent-child communication had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between the social formality dimension of Chemyon sensitivity and subjective happiness.
Conclusions: The study discusses some implications for family education and therapy to enhance subjective happiness of middle-aged married people focusing on the role of each dimension of Chemyon sensitivity and family communication.
